Philippe Starck's Gun collection AK47 lamps
You know we love industrial design, interiors—oh, and violence, too. In other words, we've been waiting for Philippe
Starck's Gun collection lamps our whole lives, and didn't even know it. They come in three flavors: table, which is an
AK-47, lounge, which is an M-16, and bedside, which is wee-baby pistol. Granted, it's all just implied
violence, but for the same reason we wear phat Tec-9 pendants on our mad gold chains, we'll be putting these all over
our columbian druglord mansions.

And if you're not satisfied with them, you can always turn them in to your local gun-buy-back program.

implied violence? i see dont see any implied violence here-- can someone enlighten me, or is this the first anti-gun comment i've seen on engadget?
BuRnT CiRcUt @ Dec 19th 2005 12:53AM
this sentance would have been equaly as humorous and just as effective had it not been politically charged with the "implied violence" bit. seriously, it would have been much funnier if you said you ordered 100 to match your engadget-issued pendants. although i do like the "cool factor" of these lamps, i would never order one, and they arent mechanical, this should be on a design blog instead of engadget.
if you want to show something interesting, great! but if you post lamps that have nothing to do with gadgets just to make a quick whip about guns insinuating violence, please make a public disclaimer that your site has a political motive.

When a US Army guy I knew was leaving Kuwait, he got a great present - a lamp made from an Iraqi RPG. It made a great desk lamp, but I have no idea how, or if, he got it out of the country...
Jayson Elliot @ Dec 19th 2005 12:53AM
Wow, gun nuts sure are touchy. Saying that M16 and AK47 images "imply violence" is a political statement? Jesus H. Christ, fools, what the hell do guns imply, if not violence?
I assume you're trying to say that guns at a shooting range aren't violent? A controlled explosion in a chamber, followed by penetration of a target, is violent. That doesn't make it bad. Violence can be fun, legal, and good for you. Look at roller derby. Fun. Shooting ranges. Fun.
But for gawd's sake, relax your persecution complexes and try to realize that not everyone is out to take your guns.
Christians, gun owners, and Republicans are about the least-oppressed people in the civilized history of mankind, and y'all can't stop whining and bitching like a bunch of spoiled schoolgirls every time someone cracks a joke. Calm down. Sheesh.
Frangible @ Dec 19th 2005 12:53AM
As a gun owner, allow me to be the first to say, these things are ass-ugly.
Philip R @ Dec 19th 2005 12:53AM
not sure about the two taller models, but the bedside pistol lamp has an inscription around the base: "happiness is a warm gun" (honest!)
ah the 'umour of monsieur starck...
Adamo @ Dec 19th 2005 12:53AM
I've worked with Starck on a project before, the guy's a nutcase.. he was supposed to design an e-book, including the logo and the name of the product. What did he call it? t.boook. Yes, t-dot-boook. That extra O is not a typo. Fun.
usedcarsalesman.com @ Dec 19th 2005 12:53AM
Sorry, I'd take the Ak-47 over the M-16 any day.
Its just more effective for downing low-flying jets and shooting through jungle trees to kill hiding imperialists. All this for 10 bucks U.S.
And, for an extra 20 bucks (going rate in parts of Africa), I'll throw in a Rocket Powered Grenade (RPG) launcher so you can take out the Delta Force Commandos before they drop from the Little Birds.
---------
Any chance of these guys coming out with a floor-standing "RPG" lamp...I need something for my office and don't have the desk space for the AK-47... :)

Eddie Izzard says:
"They say 'Guns don't kill people; people kill people'... yes... yes, but surely the gun HELPS?!"
Also, it's Col*o*mbian druglords, not Columbian. Because Columbia University is safe for all druggies.

"Wow, gun nuts sure are touchy. Saying that M16 and AK47 images "imply violence" is a political statement? Jesus H. Christ, fools, what the hell do guns imply, if not violence?"
See, when you start calling people "gun nuts" you lose all credibility. How would you like to be called an anti-gun nut? Would that help?
Guns only "imply violence" to people who know nothing about guns except for the endless brainwashing they get about guns from movies and TV, which is a make-believe world where guns, indeed, imply violence since that's why they are written into the script in the first place.
Ask anyone who's grown up with and used guns all his or her life: most of them have never seen a gun used to commit violence against another person, therefore, to them guns most certainly DO NOT imply violence in the slightest.
It's simply a matter of whether your experience with guns are real, or merely fantasy by way of the media.
Of course, if you are a criminal, your real life experience does imply that guns = violence, but for the sake of argument let us assume that none of us are violent, gun armed criminals.
What you perceive is very much dependent on what you believe.

vi•o•lence
Pronunciation: (vī'u-luns), [key]
—n.
1. swift and intense force: the violence of a storm.
...
6. damage through distortion or unwarranted alteration: to do editorial violence to a text.
So, a controlled explosion, a piece of lead leaving a barrel at 850M/s and it's destruction of any target is not violent??
I love guns, but I''ll be the first to admit that they are violent, violence does not imply an act against a person, but any object.
Trau @ Dec 19th 2005 12:53AM
"Guns aren't violent"
"'One nation under god' isn't religious"
"George W. isn't a hillbilly"
Yeah, we've heard it all before. Wait'll your kid accidentally blows his brains out with your "non-violent" guns.

BuRnT CiRcUt,
Automatic military assault rifles (i.e. the AK-47 and the M-16) imply violence. I'm sure if you were to think about this, you'd agree--this has nothing to do with politics, and is rather simple. Also, the use said attack weaponry in Starck's work here is obviously to encourage people to think about gun culture with relation to our society, and the gun's place in the household.
Furthermore, we usually keep the more interesting peripheral kinds of posts for the weekends. If you don't like reading about different gadgety things that aren't necessarily consumer electronics, then you might not want to read us between Friday night and Monday morning.
To everyone else, please don't incite a pro/anti-firearm flame war here, that's not what we're about.
Best,
Ryan

This isn't Industrial Design and Starck is no Industrial Designer. ID is so much more than just looks (ergonomics, manufacturability...) and Starck blatently disregards all of that. I am an ID'er as well - Starck is a discgrace to my profession and his work just belittles what true ID'ers are trying to accomplish.
spinedoc @ Dec 19th 2005 12:53AM

Hey there "anti-gun nuts." Thanks for proving my point. Your long winded, defensive post is a perfect example of the touchiness I was talking about.
Hell, no, it doesn't bother me to be called an "anti-gun nut." I'm not anti-gun, but anyone who hangs out with me on a Saturday night might well call me a nut. Get a sense of humor about yourself, whizzy.
I think the point all the sour Mennonites on here are missing is that these lamps are FUNNY. Philippe Starck is funny.
Sergio - you don't think he's a good ID? What have you done that's better? I own a few things designed by Starck, and I think they are eminently ergonomic and obviously manufacturable. Ever sit on his Dadada chairs? Have you noticed how "manufacturable" his designs which Target sells are? I really gotta say put up or shut up on this one, dude.
And Adamo thinks he's a nut because he named something t.boook with an extra "o"?
So whimsy makes someone a nut?
I guess we should stick to stuff like this:
